In the early 1930s the German car industry is still largely composed of luxury models, and the average German can rarely anything more than a motorcycle. Looking for a potential new market, some auto industry began an independent project o (the automobile) - Mercedes '170H, Adler Autobahn, Steyr 55, 1.3 L Hanomag, among others. The trend is not new, such as Béla Barényi credited with having conceived the basic design in the middle of the 1920s. Josef Ganz develop Superior Standard (go so far as the ad as a "Volkswagen Germany").
Also, in Czechoslovakia, which was written Ledwinka Tatra Hans's 77, a car that is very popular among the German elite, become smaller and more affordable in each revision. In 1933, with many projects on the construction or still in the early stages of production, Adolf Hitler declared intention to state-sponsored "Volkswagen" program. Hitler needed the basic vehicle capable of carrying two adults and three children at 100 km / h (62 mph). The "People's Car" will be available for citizens of the Third Reich through a savings scheme at 990 Reichsmark, about the price of a small motorcycle (average income being around 32RM one week).
Despite heavy lobbying which supports one of the existing projects, Hitler chose to sponsor an all new, state-owned factories. Engineers selected for the task Ferdinand Porsche. At that time the well-known engineers, designers Mercedes Porsche is 170H, and worked in Steyr for some time in the late 1920s. When he opened his own design studio he landed two separate "Auto für Jedermann" (car for everybody) with projects and Zündapp NSU, two motorcycle manufacturers. The project does not work, stalling at the prototype phase, but the basic concept remains in the minds of enough time Porsche, so on June 22, 1934, Dr. Ferdinand Porsche agreed to create a "People's Car" for Hitler.
Changes include fuel efficiency better, reliability, ease of use, and economically efficient repairs and parts. The goal is that ordinary Europeans will buy a car with a savings scheme ( "Fünf Mark die Woche musst Du sparen, willst Du im eigenen Wagen fahren" - "Save five Marks a week, if you want to drive their own car"), of which around 336,000 people eventually paid into. Volkswagen respect the savings agreements in West Germany (but not in East Germany) after World War II [citation needed]. The prototype of the car called "KdF-Wagen" (German: Kraft durch Freude - "strength through joy"), emerged from the year 1936 and onwards (the first car has been produced in Stuttgart).
The car already had a distinctive round shape and air-cooled flat-four, rear-mounted engine. Volkswagen is just one of many programs that KdF includes things such as tours and excursions. Volks-prefix ( "People") does not only apply to the car, but also for other products in Europe; the "Volksempfänger" radio receiver for instance. On May 28, 1937, Gesellschaft zur Vorbereitung des Deutschen Volkswagen mbH (sometimes abbreviated Gezuvor founded by Deutsche Arbeitsfront. This was later renamed "Volkswagenwerk GmbH" on September 16, 1938.
VW Type 82E
Erwin Komenda, who has long been the head designer Auto Union, developed a prototype car body, which recognized the Frog is known today. It was the first one that has evolved with the help of a wind tunnel, used in Germany since the early 1920s.
Construction of new plants starting May 26, 1938 at the new town KdF-Stadt, now called Wolfsburg, which had been purpose-built for factory workers. This plant produces only a handful of cars at the time the war began in 1939. Nothing really communicated to every holder of a seal over savings books, though one Type 1 Cabriolet was presented to Hitler on April 20, 1938 (his birthday 49).
War meant production changed to military vehicles, 82 Type Kübelwagen ( "Bucket car") utility vehicle (VW's most common wartime model), and amphibians Schwimmwagen used to supplement the German army.
